Mia LIU
born in 1980 in Taipei, Taiwan, graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute and pursued further studies at Hunter College, City University of New York. She currently resides and works in Taipei. In 2009, she was awarded the Grand Prize at the Kaohsiung Awards and participated in the Asia Biennial the same year. Her works have been exhibited in major art institutions, including the White Rabbit Gallery in Sydney, Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art in Budapest, CODA Museum in the Netherlands, Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay in Singapore, and OCI Museum of Art in South Korea. Liu was shortlisted for the Sovereign Asian Art Prize and has been invited to participate in prestigious artist residency programs such as the Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Program and Cité Internationale des Arts in France. Her works are part of numerous public and private collections, including those of Dr. Uli Sigg in Switzerland, Shanghai Library East Hall, Hermès Collection, Fubon Financial Holdings, and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.

Mia Liu approaches her practice with a spirit of openness and freedom, seeking to redefine and rethink the concepts of "painting" and "painterliness." She focuses on uncovering abstract poetry in the mundane, exploring boundaries through connections with sensations, memories, and nature. Her meticulous materiality reveals the potential of forms and mediums, embodying a philosophy of life rooted in the present moment. While her works may appear diverse in form, Liu challenges traditional notions of painting, liberating herself from the constraints of specific mediums, and establishing a distinctive drawing-based creative system.

Within the context of painting, her "Drawing Dialogues" series, initiated in 2019, integrates anonymous ink-on-paper works, pencil drawings, popular textiles, and framing techniques. The "Dialogue Bonsai" series from 2020 combines glass craftsmanship with bonsai culture, exploring the intricate interplay of glass, plants, and time. In 2022, her "Scapes in the Mist" series centered on video art, incorporating unique paper sculptures in dialogue with the history of photography.

These dialogic works do not aim to challenge the boundaries of medium for its own sake but rather to reflect on the concepts and possibilities of painting, exploring new approaches to its creation. Simultaneously, Liu aspires to evoke a pure sense of beauty through her works—an experience that, while not mainstream in contemporary art discourse, constitutes a vital exploration within her artistic journey.
