Mia Liu was born in Taipei in 1980. Liu was always interested in drawing, and in the material possibilities of paper, and she uses these media in unconventional ways. She cherishes her childhood memories of long, dreamy Sunday afternoons spent painting at home in Taipei with her mother and grandmother, both traditional Chinese ink painters. Paper, ink and brush – so fundamental to Chinese art – lie at the heart of her practice.

Liu was educated in the United States, firstly at the San Francisco Art Institute, graduating in 2007, then undertaking graduate study in painting at CUNY Hunter College in New York in 2008. While studying in San Francisco, Liu defied expectations by switching from ‘new genres’, a major that focused on conceptual art, installation, performance and new media, to return to painting and drawing. She found herself drawn back to paper, and to more ephemeral contemporary practices. Later, she returned to drawing and began to consider how the traditions and conventions of mark-making on paper could be reinvented. She is interested in the fact that drawing today is no longer bound by historical convention; it can be sculptural, kinetic – even performative. She calls her own practice ‘installation drawing’, a lengthy process that involves the physical act of drawing on paper as a starting point, before the drawings are translated into digital forms, cut, stacked, arranged in space and finally documented photographically.

In 2009 she was awarded First Prize in the Kaohsiung Award and her work was selected for the Asian Art Biennial in the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taichung. Liu participated in the Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Program in 2011 and undertook a residency at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris in 2013. Liu was one of the finalists for Sovereign Asian Art Prize in Hong Kong in 2016. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions domestic and abroad, including White Rabbit Gallery (Sydney), Ludwig Museum (Hungary), CODA Museum (Holland), National Art Museum of China (Beijing), and Esplanade (Singapore). Mia Liu lives and works in Taipei.
